FAQs
Who can join?
Anyone who is 18 years and older, and who identifies as LGBTIQA+ is welcome to join the group. While we love our allies, this group is just for LGBTIQA+ people.
Can I bring my kids?
Due to safety and insurance requirements, and the program guidelines, children and young people under 18 are not permitted to attend.
Can I bring my pet or service animal?
At this stage, pets are not permitted.
If you have a service animal please reach out before attending so we can accommodate and ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
Is there a joining fee?
No, this program is completely free of charge! If you want to, you are very welcome to bring along small donations such as seedlings and seeds, but you do not need to pay to participate.
Businesses and individuals wanting to financially support the program through donations or sponsorship should contact Bethany Bethany@workingitout.org.au to discuss.
Will food be provided?
We will provide some very light refreshments such as tea, instant coffee, water, and biscuits, but participants are invited to BYO snacks or dinner, or even get food delivered if you want to!
Can I bring drinks?
Please bring along a reusable cup or water bottle. We will provide access to water and tea and coffee. You can also bring soft drinks or your own hot beverages.
Alcoholic drinks are not permitted. This includes low-alcohol alternatives and products promoted as ‘zero alcohol’.
This is to provide a safer and more welcoming environment for all participants including those on an alcohol reduction or abstinence journey.
Do I have to come every week?
We recognise that people are busy and things change. We invite you to make this a regular part of your weekly routine so that you can develop connections, friendships, and really feel part of the group. But there are no attendance requirements and so if you can’t make every session, or if you can’t come for the whole time, that’s ok! We would rather see you sometimes than not at all.
There will be catch-up inductions every week for folks who are new to the program, so if you haven’t come along before please let the Facilitator know.
What if I can’t make it for the whole session?
We recognise that people are busy and sometimes transport and other commitments make it hard to get places on time.
Ideally we will be arriving between 5:30pm and 5:45pm each week, ready for the weekly briefing. If you aren’t able to make it in time for the briefing, you’ll need to make contact with the Garden Facilitator as soon as you arrive on site.
We will be running a site safety induction at 6pm during the first event on Friday 21 November, and it would be greatly appreciated if you could be there for that.
What will we be growing, and do we get to keep it?
This program is specifically focused on flower growing as a way to support pollination of the West Moonah Community Garden’s food growing program for West Moonah Neighbourhood House. So our job will be to plant, sow and tend to flowers.
Elements of this program are co-designed, and so the group will decide what it does with the flowers produced during the program. You may choose to take them home for a bit of cheer between sessions, you might want to sell them to boost funding for the program, or you might choose to donate them.
Accessibility information
The site will be suitable for some folks, but not all.
West Moonah Community Garden is gradually undertaking improvements to the site to make it more accessible to people with all abilities. For now, the site does include hazards such as sloped, uneven surfaces and changing surfaces (eg mulch/bark to grass to concrete to gravel).
There are a variety of seating options available.
Garden beds are at various heights, and there will be a range of activities to do, including some which can be done seated.
If you would like to participate, please feel free to reach out to Bethany Bethany@workingitout.org.au with your requirements and we will work with the venue to establish whether the site is accessible for you, and will make any changes we can to welcome you to the program.
How do I get there? Is there parking?
There is some parking on site, and street parking. Both are free and untimed.
The site is on the corner of Windbourne Road and Springfield Avenue
If you are catching a bus, please use the Metro Tas app to plan your trip.
If you are experiencing transport challenges which may impact on your ability to participate, please reach out to us ASAP at Bethany@workingitout.org.au
WIO is delighted to partner with West Moonah Neighbourhood House and CTST to deliver this program, which is supported by our partners the Alcohol and Drug Foundation (ADF).
Special thanks to Best Mix Garden Supplies for their generous donation of the soil we needed for all our garden beds.
If you or your business would also like to sponsor this program or make a donation, please contact Bethany@workingitout.org.au
